What We Do

Practice areas

A general practice with depth in the areas where most people and small businesses need a lawyer at some point.

01

Estate planning

Wills, revocable living trusts, durable powers of attorney, and health care directives. We help you put a plan in place that reflects how your family actually works — not how a template assumes it does.

02

Probate & estate administration

Guiding executors and personal representatives through the court process after a death: inventories, notices, creditor claims, distributions, and final accountings.

03

Small business & LLC formation

Entity formation, operating agreements, and the contracts that keep a small business out of trouble — independent contractor agreements, NDAs, and simple commercial leases.

04

Medicaid planning

Planning ahead to qualify for long-term-care benefits and protecting assets where the rules allow, before an application is ever filed.

05

Contract review & drafting

Reviewing agreements you've been asked to sign and drafting contracts that say what you actually mean. Plain language by default; precise where precision matters.

06

General counsel & advice

If you're not sure whether you need a lawyer yet, that itself is often a good reason to call. A short consultation can save a great deal of trouble.

07

Special needs trusts

Providing for a family member with a disability without putting the means-tested benefits they depend on at risk. First-party and third-party trusts, drafted to the applicable federal and Virginia requirements, and coordinated with the rest of the family's plan.

08

Deeds & real property transfers

Preparing and recording Virginia deeds — funding real property into a trust, adding or removing an owner, and life estate arrangements. Done carefully, with attention to the tax and Medicaid consequences a transfer can carry.

09

Business succession planning

Planning the handoff of a closely held business: ownership transitions, buy-sell provisions, and making sure the business and the owner's estate plan actually agree with one another.

10

Crisis Medicaid planning

When a loved one is already in a facility and the application cannot wait. More options remain later in the process than most families are told, and acting quickly usually widens them.

11

Provider-side Medicaid appeals

Representing nursing facilities, assisted living communities, and home care agencies in eligibility denials, coverage terminations, and fair hearings involving their residents and patients. See our provider appeals practice →

12

Medicaid denials & fair hearings

Appeals on behalf of applicants and members: long-term care and nursing facility denials, eligibility determinations, CCC Plus Waiver service reductions, terminations of existing coverage, transfer penalties, and estate recovery claims. A Request for Appeal is generally due within 30 days of receiving the notice, and if the denial came from a managed care plan a separate two-step deadline applies. We prepare the record and appear at the fair hearing.
